June 15th event — King Valdemar II Day and Reunification Day or Flag Day in Denmark.
Valdemar (28 June 1170 – 28 March 1241), later known as Valdemar the Victorious (Valdemar Seyr), was King of Denmark (while Valdemar II) from 1202 until his death in 1241.
After the Second War of Schleswig (Danish: Slesvig) in 1864, Denmark was forced to cede Schleswig-Holstein to Prussia, in a defeat that left a deep mark on Danish national identity. Following this, Denmark adopted a policy of neutrality, which resulted in Denmark remaining neutral in World War I. After the defeat of Germany, the powers of Versailles offered to return to Denmark the then German region of Schleswig-Holstein. Fearing German irredentism, Denmark refused to consider the return of this area and insisted on holding a plebiscite on the return of Schleswig. Two plebiscites on Schleswig were held on 10 February and 14 March respectively. On July 10, 1920, after a plebiscite and the reunification document signed by the king on July 9, Northern Schleswig (Sønderjylland) was returned to Denmark, thereby annexing 163,600 inhabitants and 3,984 km². Reunification Day (Genforeningsdag) is celebrated every year on June 15 at Valdemarsdag.
